Pangkor Laut, Malaysia

Surrounded by ancient rainforest, white sand beaches and an emerald sea, Pangkor Laut Resort lies on the private island after which it's named, three miles off the west coast of Malaysia, in the Straits of Malacca

Destination Anywhere Opinion: Pangkor Laut brings an exclusive and luxurious experience of Malaysia. Designed for guests who appreciate luxury and wish to relish in a secluded and intimate environment surrounded by lush rainforest

A small train of charmingly appointed stilted villas snake into the sea. The rest of the collection of Malay-style luxury villas are tucked into the hillside, shaded by the rainforest canopy or hidden in the gardens. Designed and furnished to blend with the outstanding natural environment, they feature private balconies, high ceilings, large doors and hardwood floors. All have an over-sized bath tub and shower, some with an outdoor bath. Eight secluded estates are the ultimate in luxury, each comprising several stylish buildings built around nearby Marina Bay. These residences evoke the atmosphere of the old South East Asian estates when living was inextricably linked with nature. All have infinity pools, an on call estate manager, two estate attendants and a chef.

A variety of dining options include Fisherman's Cove, a symphony of Western grill, Chinese dishes, fresh seafood and Italian, in a dynamic open show environment with beautiful sea views.

The Feast Village is an interactive dining experience and has diverse culinary delights. It also features a patisserie, café, chefs table and also the wine cellar. This is open for breakfast and dinner.

Uncle Lim's, named after the chef who has been there since its inception, specialises in Nynona and Hockchew chinese-style home cooking.

Royal Bay Beach Club overlooks the infinity pool and serves a selection of Asian and Western favourites for lunch and in the evening the restaurant transforms into a chique lounge serving cocktails and other drinks.

The Straits is set against the rocks by the beach and provides an exotic and beautiful dining environment. Private dining booths are also available offering exclusive views of the sea.

There are 2 other bars that offer light lunches through the day, called Chapman’s Bar and Jamu Bar. If you fancy something a bit more romantic then you can also experience cocktails by sunset on the resort’s teak, oriental junk.

Only 15 minutes away from the resort is an 18 hole golf club for which the resort has preferential rates.

The award-winning Spa Village includes eight treatment pavilions, open courtyards, lotus ponds and a reflexology path in four acres on a quiet bay between the sea and the rainforest. From the spa you can also experience on a daily basis Tai Chi Quan or Yoga.

There is a jogging trail set up through the rainforest. Daily guided snorkeling experiences are available as well as other water sports, such as kayaking, wake boarding, sail boarding, water skiing and sailing on the resort’s catamaran. If you felt like a spot of fishing then this is also available from the adventurous Barracuda fishing to something a bit more sedate with a picnic for two on the beach.

If you fancied something a bit different then you could also take part in the ‘chef’s kitchen experience’ and learn the art of Asian cooking as done by the experts.

In addition there are two swimming pools, gymnasium, 3 tennis courts, 1 squash court, library, hair salon, gift shop. If you fancied some time away there is also yacht that is available to charter that will take you island hopping to see some of the other local Malaysian delights.
